The King’s Hawaiian tradition began in 1950, when founder Robert Taira opened his first bakery in Hilo, Hawaii. After several years of success, Robert moved his family business to Honolulu and opened that city’s first combination Bakery & Restaurant, which became extremely popular. In addition, Robert’s unique Portuguese sweet bread received a great deal of attention from residents and visitors alike. This came to be known as King’s Hawaiian Bread. The Mainland was introduced to King’s Hawaiian in 1977 when production of King’s Hawaiian bread began with the opening of a factory in Torrance, Calif. Soon after, an expanded selection of bread products which are created with Robert’s trademark quality were distributed to grocery stores throughout the United States. In 1988, our full-service Bakery & Restaurant opened in Torrance. The unique selection of Hawaiian local food and traditional American dishes, as well as our fresh baked goods, quickly made King’s Hawaiian one of the South Bay’s most popular Bakery & Restaurants. In fact, patrons have been known to travel two hours or more to sample our foods (most notably, our Original Recipe King’s Hawaiian French Toast).
To meet demand, in 2002 we opened our second Torrance location, this time a faster, casual Bakery & Cafe. We call it The Local Place. Today, King’s Hawaiian continues to delight our customers with delicious foods, including attractive new dishes that are our connection to the new Hawaii, as well as the baked goods that have made us a household name. |
